Fill the Pantry
‘Fill the Pantry’ kaupapa is about food resilience and food security. We educate communities to more food resilient by teaching skills such as preserving, canning, fermenting and dehydrating through hands on workshops with experts. Through these skills and kōrero we can become connected to our food system and learn to live with the seasons by preserving the harvest that Papatūānuku provides as our ancestors did. Filling the pantry with preserved kai is not only good for our health as we are in control of what goes into our kai and bodies, it is also low cost. Preserving is typically done when foods are at the height of their season where the cost is low or excess from local gardens is in abundance. We encourage the reuse of glass jars for preservation which aligns with our kaupapa of Caring for Creation.
