MANAVA for Climate Resilience Reflections

As we approach Hikumutu, or Takanga o te Rā, MANAVA Iti welcomes the opportunity to reflect on the past season. Te Ika ā Māui has faced some major weather, including Cyclone Vaianu who bypassed Tāmaki Mākaurau but deeply impacted our whānau at the south of the motu. The MANAVA way of preparing for our next major weather event includes meeting in the house of LAKA, learning more skills so we are ready, eating together, and sharing our whakaaro to help build our collective resilience.

MANAVA Nui during Sign Language week.

Leading up to Matariki, we have enjoyed sharing a precious taonga with our MANAVA Nui. We were able to lay out a kāpehu whetū from our Te Toki Voyaging Trust whānau and discuss the depth of knowledge that our tipunā used to traverse Te Moana Nui a Kiwa. We shared kōrero about stars, ancestral knowledge, experiences on the ocean, and how we can use all these threads of information to build our resilience. We look forward to reflecting together next month.

Our focus continues with our MANAVA Tuvalu whānau as we video and translate eight episodes for MANAVA Toku Leo. It's a vodcast series supported by the Moana Reo Fund that is administered by Pacific Media Network. MANAVA Toku Leo highlights the eight languages of the islands of Tuvalu.

Our relationships in te ao pākehā's emergency preparedness grows with Auckland Emergency Management and MetService. Our friends from MetService came to visit LAKA and we attended the Community Civil Defence Emergency Management Forum in Manukau.

We have also been busy meeting with other people throughout the climate and activist space through wānanga like 'Ko Tāua, Tāua. Ko Tāmaki Makaurau Tātou', a Future Search Wānanga, and 'Hāumi e! Together for the Vote'. Wānanga like these help weave ourselves into the wider network of people who care for creation. Hopefully, we will see some of you at the next one!

We are looking forward to continuing our mahi! Ke Fākatoka a 'Tou Tino 'Kau Fākatasi! Let's prepare our people together! Follow our instagram to check out to receive stay in the MANAVA loop! @manavaforclimateresilience
